Marinette’s Role in the Haitian Revolution

During the Bois Caïman ceremony, Mambo Marinette, who was possessed by Erzulie Dantor, sacrificed a black pig to initiate the Vodou ritual. This event was a significant unifier for enslaved people in Haiti, who subsequently took up arms against the French.

Mambo Marinette is believed to have been burned alive, which led to her transformation to the loa spirit worshipped today. Although accounts of her death vary, some indicate she was burned during the possession ritual. In contrast, other accounts state the French carried out this execution for her role in the slave rebellion. This tragic death led to her nicknames Marinette “Bois Cheche” (dry arms) or “Pied Cheche” (dry feet), invoking a skeletal image of this loa.
